BORN 2 BE REVOLUTIONARY
by Fanny Kearse

I've always wondered what it would have been like to be....

Ms. Ruby.

First in her day, to pave the way

Of little black children and little white children

Working together to say,

We all just want a chance.
Lately I've been wondering who...

Will speak with as much truth as Dr. Angelou.

The way that Ms. Maya viewed this world challenging while leading,

taught us unequivocally

about what it means to be a woman, phenomenally.
And, what would be her answer?

Angela Davis the Panther

If we asked her, ‘did your sacrifices slow the spread of their racist cancer’?
The road is unpaved and ever bending,

Full of useless and senseless defending

As to why things still aren't fair,

As to why the founding fathers don't want to share,

The privilege. The access. The wealth.

Just as these activists that came before me,

Just as the ones I now see,

When I hear the anthem,

I will take a knee,

because,

I believe I was born to be a revolutionary.
